English is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world. Our aim is to help develop the lifelong skills and knowledge they need to become confident readers and writers so that they can reach their full potential.
Our English Curriculum
Our English Curriculum
We follow the National Curriculum 2014. This includes the teaching of speaking and listening, reading, writing, spelling and handwriting. From their earliest experience at our academy (and eventually, as we build our classes, through to the end of Year 6) the children are exposed to a wide variety of rich, first-hand literacy experiences and a broad range of text types to engage, inspire and stimulate their imaginations.
As part of our daily timetable, GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling) and handwriting sessions are included within Read Write Inc sessions and revisited throughout the curriculum in order for pupils to practise and embed their English skills. In addition, we also have daily Reading sessions as well as independent reading time. Wherever possible, we endeavour to make links between English and our thematic curriculum and provide children with additional opportunities to practise and embed their English skills.
The National Curriculum clearly states that teaching the English language is an essential, if not the most essential role of a primary school. At Newquay Primary Academy, teaching and learning core English skills is an essential priority, which we aim to embed across the curriculum, throughout school life and beyond.
